The agency clarified that the power outage was due to a technical problem caused by a sharp decrease in the volume of gas needed for the operation of the Rumaila power plant, located in Basra province. This led to a reduction in capacity by 1900 megawatts, which resulted in the blackout.
According to eyewitness accounts posted on social media, some households still have access to electricity; however, street lighting is completely absent.
Restoration work is underway at power plants and transmission lines, which, according to the Iraqi agency INA, have recently been subjected to attacks from Iran.
Later, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity reported the completion of restoration work at power plants in the central regions of the country. This was reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), citing a statement from the ministry.
According to the agency, production capacities in the north, in provinces such as Nineveh, Kirkuk, and Salah al-Din, have already been launched. The restoration process was conducted under the guidance of Deputy Minister Khalid Ghazai al-Maadhi in cooperation with the National Management Center.
Additionally, the ministry confirmed the successful restart of the first and fourth power units at the Di-Kar combined cycle power plant, while work on restoring the remaining capacities continues.
