Trump noted: “I am not afraid to send troops. Other presidents usually say, ‘Our soldiers will not be there.’ But I don’t think that way. Although, most likely, ground forces will not be needed.”
In his address to the nation, he added that the operation against Iran was planned to last from four to five weeks, but the U.S. is prepared to continue it longer if necessary. Responding to rumors that he might get bored in a few weeks, Trump commented: “I am never bored.” He also mentioned that the task of eliminating the Iranian military leadership was initially estimated to take about a month but was completed in an hour, and, as the president noted, the U.S. is “ahead of schedule.”
The president characterized the operation against Iran as “the last and best chance” to eliminate threats posed by “a sick and sinister regime.” He highlighted Washington's key objectives: the destruction of Iran's missile forces and the republic's navy. Trump also reported that the U.S. destroyed 10 Iranian ships, which are now “lying at the bottom of the sea.”
U.S. and Israeli military actions began on February 28 after failed negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. As a result of the strikes, key figures in the Iranian leadership were killed, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour, his advisor Ali Shamkhani, Chief of Staff Abdulrahim Mousavi, and Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh. Khamenei's wife also later passed away.
In response to these actions, Tehran began attacks on American bases in allied countries in the Middle East, as well as on civilian facilities. In particular, targets in Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were hit.
