A large Indian company will undertake the implementation of the 'Tuul' water complex construction project

As reported by MiddleAsianNews, the Water Resources Management of Mongolia has signed a Memorandum with Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) for joint work on large projects related to water infrastructure.

The partnership will allow for the preparatory work to begin on the "Tuul Water Supply Dam" project.

In the first phase, experts conducted a study to select a suitable location, considering geological and topographical conditions, as well as the capacity of reservoirs. As a result, the third site was chosen as the most optimal. Detailed surveys and design work will now commence in this area.

At a meeting with stakeholders in January, officials emphasized the need to expedite the development of the technical and economic justification and a comprehensive approach to the subsequent stages.

The implementation of this project occurs against the backdrop of growing concerns about water security in Ulaanbaatar, where the centralized water supply system provides about 200,000 cubic meters of water daily, primarily for domestic needs, while the remaining portion is distributed between industry and the energy sector. Currently, the city is entirely dependent on groundwater.

However, population growth, urban expansion, and industrial development are leading to an increased demand for water. At the same time, climate change and uneven precipitation limit groundwater reserves, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of a water supply system heavily reliant on a single source.

The Tuul dam project aims to create a new source of surface water to diversify the water supply system.

Preliminary studies indicate that the reservoir will cover an area of 5,569 hectares and have a volume of 50 to 100 million cubic meters. The dam is planned to be 685.15 meters long and 35.8 meters high, with a sediment depth of 19.84 meters. These parameters are expected to meet the growing long-term water demand in Ulaanbaatar.

Upon completion of the project, it is anticipated that surface water regulation will improve, dependence on groundwater sources will decrease, and flood protection will increase. The project is also expected to provide more accessible water for industrial and energy needs, creating a more sustainable and reliable water resource management system for the capital.
