Mongolia moves to the next stage of the copper smelting plant selection process

A consortium of Chinese companies and a Swiss company are competing for the construction of the first copper smelting plant in Mongolia. This information is reported by MiddleAsianNews.

The Cabinet of Ministers was presented with a report from the working group on the process of constructing the plant for smelting and refining copper concentrate. This project is being implemented as part of the development of an industrial and technological complex overseen by the state mining corporation "Erdenet".

The project was presented to 55 companies from more than 20 countries, recognized as global leaders in the field of copper and metallurgy. Of these, 13 companies from seven countries expressed interest in participation, offering their investments and cooperation. Based on an analysis of the experience of implementing similar projects, as well as technical and financial criteria, four companies from two countries were selected, and the next stage of selection is currently being prepared, according to information from the Government's Public Relations and Media Office.

Finalists include participants such as the Chinese company NFC, Jiangxi Copper, a consortium consisting of Liantou New Energy Technology, China ENFI Engineering Corporation, and Shanxi Northern Copper Industry, as well as the Swiss Glencore International AG.

At a meeting held on February 25, 2026, the Cabinet instructed the working group to prepare documents for the participants who passed the preliminary selection and to evaluate their proposals during the final selection process. The head of the Cabinet Secretariat, Byambatsogt Sandagu, received the corresponding instruction.
