According to information provided by Reuters, more than 3,600 residents of the cities of Juiz de Fora and Ubá have been forced to leave their homes. The administration of Juiz de Fora urged local residents from areas at high risk of flooding to evacuate and move to specially prepared temporary shelters. In turn, the federal government of Brazil has expedited the process of providing assistance to the region by sending medical personnel and specialists from the national defense.
Interestingly, on February 25, authorities reported 30 fatalities and 440 evacuees. In Brazil, the rainy season, which lasts from December to March, is traditionally accompanied by heavy downpours, flooding, and landslides. However, as of the end of February 2026, rainfall levels in the southern and eastern states significantly exceeded the norm, and for the city of Juiz de Fora, this month became the rainiest in history.
