Laurence de Car
In an interview with Le Figaro, Laurence de Car explained that her decision to resign was due to the inability to overcome obstacles to modernizing the Louvre. She noted that during her four years in charge, she managed to restore the museum's momentum. "I may have made mistakes, but I believe I brought the Louvre back into motion," she added. Laurence de Car had been the director of the Louvre since September 2021.
Her resignation came just four months after the robbery that occurred on October 19, 2025, when masked criminals stormed the Louvre and stole nine items from the imperial collection. Among the stolen items were jewelry belonging to Napoleon and his wife Josephine. The damage from this incident amounted to 88 million euros. Four people were arrested in connection with the theft, but the jewels have still not been found.
After the robbery, Laurence de Car had already submitted her resignation, but at that time Emmanuel Macron rejected her request.
