In his statement, Trump emphasized: “I have decided to immediately increase tariffs for all countries (…) from 10% to 15%. This decision is absolutely legal.” He also added that his team will continue working on a new tariff policy. Let us remind you that earlier, on Saturday night, the president signed a decree introducing “global tariffs” of 10% on imports from all countries; however, the White House clarified that this measure would not affect certain goods that are critical to the U.S. economy.
The American leader had previously warned of the possibility of introducing such tariffs in light of a Supreme Court decision that deemed many of the previously imposed tariffs illegal. The court established that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA) does not grant the president the authority to impose import tariffs.
