The stampede occurred during mass competitions at the temple complex, where participants dressed in loincloths compete for wooden sticks called "shingi," which are believed to bring good luck. According to law enforcement, panic began when the lights suddenly went out in the main hall of the temple, and the sticks were thrown into the crowd.
According to the organizers, about 10,000 people participated in the festival this year. After the incident, the organizers expressed their apologies, acknowledging that safety measures were insufficient.
