During the investigation, it was revealed that the crime took place in January 2025 against the backdrop of hostilities in the Kursk region. The court established that Ivanov, along with other Russian servicemen, organized an ambush in which two Ukrainian soldiers raised their hands, wishing to surrender, but Ivanov opened fire on them.
At the court hearings, some of Ivanov's comrades claimed that he acted on the orders of his commander. Nevertheless, the court concluded that there were no grounds for the use of force, and Ivanov was aware that his actions were contrary to the law.
The crime was classified under the article on "violations of the laws and customs of war, committed by a group of individuals, resulting in the death of persons protected by international humanitarian law."
In addition, the court partially satisfied the civil claim, and Ivanov is required to pay 50 million hryvnias in compensation to the widow of one of the deceased.
