The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has signed a law that cancels the emergency measures previously in place and introduces unified rules for providing assistance to foreigners.
According to the president's statement, the new law creates a more organized system of assistance and excludes the possibility of providing privileges to Ukrainian citizens at the expense of Poles.
Previously, in 2022, a special law was adopted that simplified the process of obtaining housing, work, social benefits, and education for refugees. The new measure proposes a phased abolition of this system, integrating key support mechanisms into the general provisions on the protection of foreigners.
Social benefits will now depend on employment and compulsory schooling for children. To legalize their stay, Ukrainians will be offered to apply for a temporary residence permit for three years.
Additionally, the new law extends the stay in Poland for Ukrainian citizens forced to leave the country due to the conflict until March 4, 2027. It also introduces a requirement to apply for a PESEL identification number within 30 days of arriving in the country.
