The former chief physician from Germany became a king in Niger

Dr. Issifi Djibe, who led a medical institution in Rendsburg for a long time, has become the new emir of Kokoru — a region in Niger. This was reported by the Kazinform agency, citing information from the BILD publication.

After finishing his medical career, Djibe, along with his wife, settled in Schleswig-Holstein and had no intention of returning to his homeland, especially in the role of a ruler. However, Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, caught his attention.

Djibe, who received a scholarship to study in Germany in 1970 and became a doctor, also has aristocratic roots. He was one of the possible heirs of the late monarch, who passed away in 2023. According to him, the family would not have approved of his refusal of the title or participation in the elections.

Despite the fact that power in Niger is concentrated in the hands of the government in the capital, Niamey, traditional power structures continue to exist. In Kokoru, where about 150,000 people live, the king is elected by local chiefs.

More than ten candidates participated in the elections held in the region. According to German media, some of Djibe's opponents even threatened him. Nevertheless, he managed to win, receiving 25 votes out of a possible 51. Thus, he took the position of emir of Kokoru for life.

Djibe notes that the country remains tense in light of threats from jihadist groups, which forces him to move with security. He sees his role as building bridges between the local population and the central authority. The emir has the right to collect taxes and make judicial decisions, and he also plans to develop the region's infrastructure for more efficient resource use.

Despite his new responsibilities, Djibe does not intend to completely give up his life in Germany. He plans to return to Schleswig-Holstein from time to time, and in his absence, his brother will manage affairs in Niger.
