In the vote on this issue, 75 members of parliament supported the dismissal of Jeri, 24 deputies voted against, and three abstained.
José Jeri had been serving as interim president since October 10, 2025, when his predecessor Dina Boluarte was removed amid rising crime rates in the country. His departure marks another step in the long-term political crisis that has been ongoing in Peru, where seven heads of state have changed since 2016.
The investigation that led to Jeri's dismissal is related to a leak of information about his unofficial meeting in December with two businessmen from China. One of them has active contracts with the government, while the other is suspected of illegal logging. Jeri, for his part, rejected all accusations, claiming that the discussion was about preparing a cultural event.
Now, parliament is required to elect a new interim president from among its members, who will hold the position until July 28, when elections are scheduled for April 12, and power will be transferred to the new head of state. José Jeri will return to his duties in Congress until the current term ends.
Voting on the candidacy of the new interim president is expected to take place on Wednesday after the registration of candidates from parliamentary factions.
