Tragedy struck at the ski resort of Courmayeur in the Italian region of Aosta Valley: three skiers of French origin, aged between 29 and 35, died as a result of an avalanche.
According to the publication La Repubblica, two of them died at the scene of the incident on Sunday, while the third, who was in critical condition, died in the hospital to which rescuers transported him.
It is reported that all three were in an area where a high avalanche risk was declared — three points on a five-point scale at altitudes up to 2,400 meters and four points at higher elevations. Two helicopters from the alpine service were involved in the rescue operation, as the skiers were buried under a layer of snow one meter deep.
