Zelensky stated that Ukraine will hold elections if given two months of truce

Ukrainian President stated: "If we are given two months of truce, we are ready for elections. It's very simple. We need a truce, security, and time to prepare."
Zelensky noted that the United States could pressure Russia to achieve such a truce: "Convince Putin to reach a truce, and then we will change the legislation and hold elections if necessary. If elections in Ukraine are important for Americans and Russians, we are open to that."
Additionally, he added that Ukraine could initiate a similar "truce for the Russians" if they hold fair elections in their country.

According to Ukrainian laws, presidential and parliamentary elections cannot take place under martial law. As a result of Russian aggression, elections scheduled for the established dates did not take place.

In December 2025, amid peace negotiations, U.S. President Donald Trump stated the need to organize elections in Ukraine. In response, Zelensky expressed readiness to hold elections within 60-90 days, provided security is ensured by the U.S. and Europe.

A February report by the Financial Times, citing sources, indicates that Zelensky plans to announce presidential elections and a referendum on the fourth anniversary of the conflict with Russia, which is marked on February 24. However, the President of Ukraine stated that he is hearing about such a plan for the first time.
