Record number of magnetic storms on Earth occurred in January

According to Kazinform, citing TASS, January 2026 set a record for the number of magnetic storms. Data from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences indicate that this month saw the maximum number of days with magnetic storms since 2017.
At the beginning of 2026, high geomagnetic activity is observed, and experts suggest that this year may turn out to be one of the most active in the last ten years. During January, 10 days were recorded with magnetic storms, which is the highest figure for the entire 25th solar activity cycle and the most significant since September 2017.

The main source of these magnetic storms has been identified as coronal holes.
