The head of the Canadian government expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved. He explained to Trump that ownership of the bridge should be shared between the government of Canada and the state of Michigan in the USA.
The construction of the bridge, named after the famous Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, began in 2018 and was fully funded by the Canadian government in the amount of $4.7 billion. The opening of the bridge is expected to take place in the coming months.
It is worth noting that earlier Donald Trump threatened to block the new route until Washington received "full compensation for everything" from Ottawa. Interestingly, the New York Times reported on a meeting between American entrepreneur Matt Moroun, whose family owns the neighboring Ambassador Bridge, and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick just hours before Trump's threat.
