Record number of magnetic storms recorded on Earth in January

The main source of storms this month was coronal holes on the Sun. However, an exception was the most powerful magnetic storm of January, which lasted from the 19th to the 21st. It was caused by a plasma cloud striking Earth, ejected as a result of an X1.9 class solar flare that occurred on January 18.

Since the beginning of February, geomagnetic activity has temporarily decreased: only one magnetic storm was recorded in the first week of the month. Interestingly, a recent powerful surge in solar activity, one of the strongest in the 21st century, which was accompanied by several major flares, had virtually no impact on Earth.

The reasons for this behavior remain unclear, but the situation may change soon as new coronal holes approach our planet.
