“The Mongolian horse, originating from the Mongolian plateau, is considered one of the oldest breeds in the world. The height of these horses at the withers ranges from 120 to 135 centimeters, and their weight varies from 267 to 370 kilograms,” reports the author of MiddleAsianNews.

Despite its compact size, the Mongolian horse is characterized by a strong build and high endurance, allowing it to successfully adapt to harsh climatic conditions and long periods of pasture-based living.

The Mongolian horse, possessing high speed and endurance, has historically served as an important means of transportation and a military animal, playing a key role in the establishment of the great Mongolian Empire under Genghis Khan.

Traditional Mongolian horse racing is not only a beloved sport but also a way to preserve cultural heritage. In this competition, riders demonstrate their skills and deep connection with the horses.

According to preliminary data, it is expected that by 2025-2026, the population of Mongolian horses in Mongolia will reach around 5 million individuals. Various initiatives are being implemented in the country to protect and preserve this ancient breed, including the establishment of reserves and the improvement of breeding methods.

This figure underscores that the number of horses in Mongolia significantly exceeds the population, which is approximately 3.6 million people. This indicates that the country has one of the highest concentrations of horses per capita in the world. The livestock sector continues to be an important and developing part of Mongolia's economy and culture.

Horses in Mongolia are used daily for herding livestock, transportation, and the production of airag, fermented mare's milk.

Despite the instability of populations of other livestock species, the number of horses has remained stable and even slightly increased in recent years.

The World Horse Day will take place in Mongolia from July 11 to 13, 2026, aimed at promoting Mongolian traditions and cultural heritage on the international stage, developing tourism, and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Mongolian horse.
