President Tokayev noted that no one intends to question the significance of the current Constitution, which has played a key role in the country's achievements over three decades. He added that much of the credit for this should go to the first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. "The Constitution was adopted at a time when Kazakhstan was just beginning its path to independence and reflects the difficult years of our state's formation," Tokayev emphasized.
The head of state also pointed out the significant changes that have occurred in the country in recent years, which have influenced national consciousness and, according to him, caused serious upheavals. He indicated the need to update Kazakhstan's goals, values, and principles through the adoption of a new Constitution.
Traditionally, expanded government meetings are held once a year and serve as a format for interaction between the president and the Cabinet of Ministers.
On January 31, a draft of a new Constitution was presented in Kazakhstan, which is planned to be put to a referendum. A specially created commission is discussing this document. The new fundamental law proposes a transition to a unicameral parliament, the introduction of the position of vice president, the reform of advisory bodies, and a number of other changes. The current Constitution was adopted in 1995.
