The first day of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy was marred by sabotage on the railway, leading to temporary delays in train services. According to information received from Italian law enforcement, three acts of sabotage were recorded in the north of the country on February 7, causing trains to be delayed by up to 2.5 hours.

One of the incidents occurred before dawn near Pesaro, where a distribution board was set on fire. In Bologna, unidentified individuals cut a cable responsible for controlling train speed. Additionally, a primitive explosive device was found on the section between Bologna and Padua.

The Italian state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato reported the temporary closure of the station in Bologna, which is an important hub for high-speed trains. The company noted that technical malfunctions could not have caused the incidents.

The investigation into the incidents is being handled by the police's anti-terrorism unit. Law enforcement officials believe that all three acts are interconnected; however, no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for these actions so far.

Bologna plays a key role in Italy's railway infrastructure, linking the north and south of the country and serving as an important point on routes to cities hosting the 2026 Olympics, such as Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

In the afternoon, Italian rail transport began to gradually recover. The Italian Ministry of Transport characterized these events as a "serious case of sabotage."
