In Italy, 3 skiers died as a result of avalanches while skiing off-piste in the area of the Winter Olympics

In the Dolomites, near Cortina d'Ampezzo, where the women's alpine skiing competitions are taking place, two avalanches occurred in the Marmolada area. The Alpine Rescue Service reported that the body of one of the men, who was skiing with four other skiers and left the slope at the top of Punta Rocca, which is 3300 meters high and part of the Marmolada massif — the highest mountain in the Dolomites — has been found.

Additionally, in Albosaggia, a village located in the lower part of Valtellina, about 65 km east of Bormio, two more skiers who were skiing off-piste also died. This area is hosting men's alpine skiing competitions.
