Artists performing in Kazakhstan will be censored

As explained by Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Evgeny Kochetov at a press conference on Thursday, the authorities plan to recommend that artists avoid performing songs that may be perceived as violating the law. “We will support local executive bodies. The contracts will specify the obligations of the performers that they must fulfill. This primarily concerns those compositions that should not undermine national values, promote pornography, or drugs,” Kochetov stated.
He added that this is a complete list of undesirable content that may exist, and “if everything is in order,” then the artist will be able to perform in any city in Kazakhstan.
“From our point of view, this is an absolutely reasonable and correct decision,” noted the deputy minister.
In response to a question about whether this excludes the possibility of artists performing with prohibited themes in their work, Kochetov clarified: “We will recommend that they do not perform such musical works.”
