Negotiations between Iran and the USA on the nuclear program have started in Oman

The negotiations on the nuclear program between Iran and the USA have begun in the capital of Oman, Muscat, with the mediation of diplomats from this country. This was reported by the Iranian news agency Mehr.

The Iranian delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is joined by Deputy Minister for Economic Diplomacy Hamid Ghanbari. The American side is represented by the President's special envoy Steve Witkoff, as well as Jared Kushner.

Before the start of the negotiation process, the heads of both delegations met with Oman's Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi.

The head of the Iranian delegation, while at the negotiations, emphasized that Tehran approaches this process "in good faith," taking into account previous experience and striving to uphold its rights. Iran's main priority lies in issues of lifting or easing sanctions. At the same time, Washington expressed a desire to expand the agenda of discussions; however, Tehran agrees to focus exclusively on the nuclear program.

As reported by Axios, the US-Iran negotiations became possible due to pressure from Arab allies on the US President. The head of the White House received requests from leaders of at least nine countries in the region about the need to continue meetings.

In 2025, Steve Witkoff and Abbas Araghchi held five rounds of negotiations in Oman regarding the Iranian nuclear program, but they did not yield positive results. Personal contacts ceased after the US strike on Iranian nuclear facilities in July. On January 26, US President Donald Trump called on Iran to conclude a "fair and equitable" deal that implies a complete renunciation of nuclear weapons.
