This incident occurred amid diplomatic efforts to organize negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran's nuclear program. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if an agreement is not reached, the consequences could be severe.
Following the drone incident, global oil prices rose by more than $1 per barrel.
The Iranian delegation at the UN did not comment on the incident, while the Tasnim agency reported a loss of communication with the drone in international waters, without providing details.
On the same day, in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian boats and a drone rapidly approached a U.S. commercial vessel, threatening to seize it. However, the tanker continued on its way under the protection of a U.S. warship.
The aircraft carrier strike group is currently an important component of the increased U.S. military presence in the Middle East following recent harsh actions by Iranian authorities regarding anti-government protests.
