In Greenland, the quota for military service equivalent has been increased
The essence of the basic Arctic education program lies in training that lasts from six to 12 months, during which recruits acquire various military skills. The training takes place in Kangerlussuaq, located on the west coast of Greenland.
Participation in this program is open to Greenlandic youth aged 18 and over who have successfully passed a medical examination and written tests. Upon completion of the training, recruits may continue their service in the Danish armed forces.
As stated in the press release from the Danish armed forces, "as a result of coordination with the government of Greenland, a decision has been made to increase the quota for basic Arctic education from 30 to 50 recruits starting in the summer of 2026. This will meet the growing interest among Greenlandic youth in acquiring skills in defense and readiness."
It is worth noting that the program was first opened in May 2024 for 22 candidates, after which the quota was increased to 30 people.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark; however, in the past, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed the opinion about the possibility of transferring the island to the United States. In response, the authorities of Denmark and Greenland emphasized the importance of maintaining territorial integrity.
