The number of suicides among schoolchildren in Japan has reached a record high
According to preliminary data, in 2025, there were 532 suicides among Japanese school students. The main reasons were low grades, anxiety about the future, and conflicts with peers (316 cases). Health issues ranked second (315 cases), while family difficulties came in third (181 cases).
The publication emphasizes that last year, Japanese authorities took a number of measures to combat the problem of child suicides, including increasing the number of school psychologists and developing counseling services on social media.
In 2024, the number of suicides among students was 529 cases, which is 16 more than the previous year. Of this number, 15 students were from elementary school, 163 from middle school, and 351 from high school. The main factors contributing to suicides among youth under 20 are also related to school issues, followed by health and family circumstances.
The total number of suicides in the country across all age groups was 19,097 cases in 2025, while in 2024, this figure reached 20,320.
