On Friday, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets announced the start of an investigation into the popular American gaming platform Roblox. This decision is related to potential security threats that may arise for underage users.
“We are initiating an investigation to determine how effectively Roblox protects young users within the European Union,” the agency stated in an official announcement.
As part of this investigation, it will be analyzed whether the platform is taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of children who actively use its services.
It is worth noting that Roblox often finds itself at the center of discussions due to concerns about content containing violence or sexual elements that children may be exposed to. There are also reports of malicious actors attempting to contact minors through the platform, as well as methods that mislead users to stimulate purchases.
In recent months, the Authority for Consumers and Markets has also received notifications about similar cases and has been gathering information about the platform as part of a preliminary analysis.
As reported in October, the Dutch government intends to conduct a risk assessment related to child safety on Roblox, taking into account incidents of violence, extortion, and sexual nature recorded on the platform.
