The most severe consequences are observed in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, where more than half of all fatalities have been recorded. The disaster has affected vast areas from Texas to New Jersey.
Hundreds of National Guard soldiers have been mobilized to assist the affected in Mississippi and Tennessee. Their task is to clear roads and provide help to stranded drivers and residents left without electricity.
The National Weather Service has warned of a new cold snap caused by the influx of Arctic air into the southeastern part of the country. In Nashville, temperatures could drop to -10 °C on Friday night, and with the wind, it may feel like -18 °C. Authorities have also reported the closure of sections of interstate highways I-55 and I-22 in northern Mississippi and ongoing risks due to icy conditions.
