On Thursday, a tragedy occurred at Praia del Chifre beach, located in Olinda in northeastern Brazil: a 13-year-old boy became a victim of a shark, reports Kazinform, citing information from Xinhua.
According to the medical services of the state of Pernambuco, the teenager was in the water with friends, despite the presence of warning signs about frequent shark attacks in the area. Witnesses of the incident reported that the shark attacked the boy from behind, inflicting serious injuries. The child was urgently taken to a hospital in Olinda, but he died from blood loss.
According to the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Attacks, 82 cases of attacks have been recorded in Pernambuco since 1992, of which 27 resulted in fatalities.
Regional authorities noted that signs warning against swimming due to the high risk of shark encounters have been installed on the beaches of Recife and Olinda. These places are especially popular among tourists during the carnival season.
