"America the Beautiful" is a patriotic American song, with music written by amateur composer Samuel Ward (1847—1903) in the 1880s. Later, in the early 20th century, the lyrics were adapted into secular verses by the little-known writer Katharine Lee Bates (1859—1929). Since the 1930s, the popularity of this song has continued to grow, and it is now one of the most recognized patriotic melodies in the U.S.

In 1882, Ward composed the music for the Protestant hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem," the words of which were written by Scottish theologian David Dickson in the 17th century. In 1904, the lyrics were revised, and instead of the original Christian content, a secular poem by K. Bates titled Pikes Peak (1895) was created based on it. Bates completed a second revision of the lyrics in 1904, and the third, now-famous version was published in her collection in 1912 under the title America the Beautiful.

Since 1929, the song has become nationally popular. It is currently considered one of the most beloved patriotic songs in the U.S., and at various times, especially during the presidency of J.F. Kennedy, there were proposals to consider replacing the U.S. national anthem — The Star-Spangled Banner — with it.
