In August 2026, Mongolia will host the preliminary matches of Group D at the Asian Basketball Championship, which will take place in 2029.
This tournament will feature teams from Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Fiji. The competitions will run from August 24 to September 1, 2026, and will determine which participants will advance further in the qualifying process.
The main goal of this preliminary tournament is to identify the teams that can progress to the second round of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, and then participate in the continental tournament and other international competitions. Of all the participants at this stage, the top three teams will be able to advance further.
Kyrgyzstan has joined Group B, where it will compete against Kazakhstan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
Mongolia has significant experience in organizing major international basketball events. Since 2022, the country has hosted important FIBA tournaments, including the preliminary matches of the Asia Cup, the qualifying round of the Women's Asia Championship, the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2025, and the FIBA 3x3 World Championship 2025.
Additionally, Mongolia has been the venue for club competitions, such as the Final Four of the Asian Champions League and East 2025. These events highlight Mongolia's growing reputation as a significant organizer of both continental and international basketball tournaments.
