The withdrawal of Russian troops began last week, according to Reuters, citing its sources. It is expected that part of the personnel will be relocated to the Russian airbase Khmeimim, located in the west of the country, while another part will return to Russia.

According to the Syrian security service, military equipment and heavy weapons have been transported from Kamyshly to Khmeimim in recent days.

Reuters journalists observed on January 26 that the flags of the Russian Federation were still flying at the airport, and two planes with Russian identification marks were on the runway.

Additionally, the publication "Al-Monitor" released a video allegedly taken at the Russian base in Kamyshly. The footage shows abandoned items and Russian flags waving above the communication tower.

Kamyshly is one of three bases that Russia has in Syria. Military forces were deployed here in 2019 and remained after the change of power in the country, with their presence even increasing in the summer of 2025.

On January 21, the newspaper "Kommersant" reported that, according to a source, the Syrian authorities discussed the possibility of requesting the Russian military contingent to leave the airport after the Kurds were ousted from the area, as "there will be no further need for the RF army there."
