The initiator of this extension was Zelensky himself, who presented both bills to parliament on January 12. The deputies approved them on January 14, after which the documents were sent for the president's signature. According to the new laws, the martial law and mobilization will continue from February 3 to May 4. Until the beginning of February, the current situation remains based on previous decisions made at the end of October 2025.

Martial law in Ukraine was introduced with the onset of Russian aggression on February 24, 2022. On the same day, Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization. In August 2025, the government allowed young people aged 18 to 22 to leave the country.

The military regime provides Ukrainian authorities with the ability to impose certain restrictions. As reported by "RBK-Ukraine," within its framework, free movement across the country may be prohibited, as well as restrictions on transportation for both citizens and foreigners. The introduction of labor conscription and compulsory community service for certain categories of citizens is also possible. Additionally, forced confiscation of property in the interests of the army is permitted.

Furthermore, under martial law, political parties that threaten Ukraine's sovereignty may be banned, and rallies, demonstrations, and other mass events may be restricted, as indicated in the publication.

Due to the ongoing martial law, the presidential elections scheduled for 2024 will not take place.
