The bill is now awaiting consideration in the Senate, which, according to Minister of Digital Technologies Ann Le Enanff, will happen in the coming weeks.
Additionally, a ban on the use of mobile phones is planned, which is already actively implemented in schools and colleges. Support for this law is based on the need to protect children from toxic content, as well as from insults and harassment online.
If the law is finally adopted, France will become the first country in Europe to introduce age restrictions for access to social networks. President Emmanuel Macron previously stated on social media X that "the mental capabilities of our children should not be a subject of trade" and called for the acceleration of the law's passage so that it comes into effect at the beginning of the new school year.
This is not France's first attempt to establish rules for minors in the digital space. In 2023, the introduction of so-called "digital adulthood" starting at 15 years old was discussed, but the initiative was halted due to inconsistencies with European Union legislation.
