Recently, 48 million passwords from Gmail accounts were leaked online, according to information from the "Dozhd" channel.
Cybersecurity specialist Jeremy Fowler discovered a massive unprotected database containing 149 million unique logins and passwords, including 48 million from Gmail. The total volume of the leak amounted to 96 gigabytes, and the files were not protected by encryption, Forbes reports.
In addition to Google accounts, this database contained data from several other well-known platforms. Among the affected services are Facebook with 17 million records, Instagram (6.5 million), Yahoo (4 million), Netflix (3.4 million), and Outlook (1.5 million).
Experts suggest that the leak did not occur due to a hack of Google or Meta servers. Most likely, the database represents a collection of data obtained through viruses that steal information from infected user devices. Fowler noted that during the analysis of the database, the number of records in it continued to grow.
The database was accessible online without a password for over a month. Fowler had difficulty removing the data, as the hosting provider referred to its subsidiary, which refused to disclose information about the server owner. Access to the database is currently closed.
