Friedrich Merz explained that the governance mechanisms of the "Council of Peace" contradict the constitution of Germany. He emphasized that he had previously informed Trump of Berlin's readiness to participate in this initiative on the condition that the council would oversee compliance with the peace agreements in the Gaza Strip. However, in the existing format, Germany cannot accept the proposed conditions "for constitutional reasons."

Nevertheless, the chancellor noted that Germany is open to discussing new formats of cooperation with the USA aimed at achieving peace not only in the Middle East but also in Ukraine.

George Meloni also expressed her position, rejecting the proposal to join the "Council of Peace," pointing out its incompatibility with the Constitution of Italy. She stated that the council's charter does not align with the country's legal system and has already notified Washington about this. At the same time, the prime minister expressed hope that potential contradictions could be resolved, after which Italy could reconsider its participation.

As DW points out, the main power in the "Council of Peace" will be concentrated in the hands of Trump, who will be able to hold the position of chairman for life. His resignation is only possible at his own decision or by unanimous decision of the executive committee, which includes Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The "Council of Peace" is an intergovernmental organization created at the initiative of the President of the United States with the aim of ensuring a peaceful resolution in the Gaza Strip and has a UN mandate. Of the approximately 60 invited countries, 26 joined the initiative, among which Bulgaria and Hungary confirmed their participation on behalf of the EU countries.
