An Outbreak of an Incurable Virus Recorded in India
Representatives of the health services in West Bengal reported that the condition of the nurse has improved; however, the patient remains in critical condition. Both patients are in the intensive care unit.
The Nipah virus is classified by the World Health Organization as a high-risk pathogen. As of today, there are no antiviral drugs for its treatment. Bats are considered potential carriers of the virus, and there is also a risk of infection through contaminated fruits.
Among the main symptoms of the disease are fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat. In advanced cases, inflammation of the brain may develop, which can lead to coma within just two days. According to the WHO, the mortality rate for Nipah virus infection can range from 40% to 75%.
