India has begun an active fight against the spread of the deadly Nipah virus, according to a report by The Independent.
The authorities have taken urgent measures in the state of West Bengal, where five cases of infection have been registered, including among healthcare workers.
Approximately one hundred people are under home quarantine. Patients are being treated in hospitals in Kolkata, with the condition of one of the infected individuals being considered critical.
The Nipah virus, which the World Health Organization classifies as a high-risk pathogen, is dangerous and currently there is no effective treatment. The main carriers of the virus are bats, and it can also be transmitted through contaminated fruits.
