In 2025, two new potato varieties were introduced to the market: "Darkhan-212" and "Darkhan-222." This information was provided by MiddleAsianNews.

According to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry, the Institute of Plant Breeding and Agricultural Sciences has developed over 100 varieties of various agricultural crops, of which more than 20 have been adapted to the region's conditions. Recently, the varieties "Darkhan-212" and "Darkhan-222" were introduced into production.

Every year, approximately 400-450 tons of high-quality seeds of early-maturing varieties "Darkhan-160" and "Darkhan-131," as well as medium- and late-maturing varieties "Darkhan-190" and "Darkhan-144," are produced in the agricultural sector.

Five new potato varieties have been created, 14 of which are adapted to local conditions, and 16 varieties have been selected as promising and are currently in production.

The Institute annually supplies between 80,000 to 100,000 healthy microtubers, which accounts for 40% of the total volume of potato seed material in the country. Technologies for planting leek seeds have also been developed, which helps reduce costs and labor intensity.

Scientists at the institute emphasize that countries are actively working on preserving the genes of rare and endangered plants for up to 100 years through precise scientific regulation.

During the visit of Nyamzhav Baasansuren, Deputy Minister of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry, the importance of further studying soil conditions and fertility in Mongolia was highlighted, as well as the need to establish an international laboratory for preserving rare plant seeds.

Additionally, a research program aimed at improving crop rotation from 2025 to 2030 has been developed, which should promote the development of agronomy on a more scientific basis.

In our country, collective farms began their work in 1956 when the first grain harvest was collected from an area of 2,000 hectares. In 1959, the government of Mongolia initiated the first campaign to develop virgin lands to increase the production of wheat, potatoes, and vegetables. A successfully conducted second campaign in 1976 allowed the cultivated area to increase to 1.2 million hectares, fully satisfying the domestic demand for grain, potatoes, and vegetables.

As of the end of 2025, the country harvested 274.1 thousand tons of grain, of which 252.3 thousand tons were wheat, 101.9 thousand tons were potatoes, 208.6 thousand tons were vegetables, 133.3 thousand tons were fodder crops, and 27.2 thousand tons were oilseeds, totaling 745.1 thousand tons.
