The scientist warned about the extinction of seals in the White Sea
According to Alexey Kokorin, a climatologist and expert from the "Nature and People" foundation, seal pups are born in April and early May. Previously, precipitation during these months was extremely rare; however, recently, due to climate changes, rain has become a common occurrence. This results in the pups becoming wet and susceptible to hypothermia, threatening their survival in the White Sea, reports RIA Novosti.
Kokorin also noted that the main factor contributing to global climate change is the use and burning of fossil fuels, which intensifies the greenhouse effect.
"The situation for seals in the White Sea is causing serious concern, as they seem unable to adapt to the changes occurring in their habitat. Pups are born with warm fur, which does not protect them from water. Previously, there was almost no precipitation in April and May, but now it occurs quite frequently. This leads to the pups getting wet and dying from the cold. Thus, their survival in the White Sea is becoming impossible," said Kokorin.
Additionally, the climatologist mentioned that over the past fifty years, the temperature in Russia has increased by an average of 2.5 degrees, significantly exceeding the global temperature changes, which have been about one degree.
