Moldova has launched the process of exiting the CIS
The authorities of Moldova have begun the procedure for denouncing the main agreements on which the Commonwealth of Independent States is based. This was announced by Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi on Radio Moldova, as reported by RIA Novosti.
According to the minister, this concerns three key documents. After the denunciation is completed, Moldova will officially exit the CIS. "The process has already been initiated. The decision has been made, and the approval procedure has begun," emphasized Popșoi.
It is expected that the relevant documents will be sent to parliament after the start of the new session, and discussions may take place by mid-February. If parliament approves them, and President Maia Sandu gives final consent, the country will complete its exit from the CIS.
Since 2022, Moldova has not participated in CIS meetings and has effectively suspended its interaction with the Eurasian Economic Union, in which it holds observer status. The country's authorities intend to redirect their export connections to Western markets and adapt the international legal framework to European standards as part of the Euro-integration course.
By the end of 2025, Moldova plans to denounce 67 out of 255 agreements signed within the framework of the CIS.
The opposition criticizes the actions of the authorities, pointing to possible negative consequences for labor migrants and economic ties. Former president and leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon previously stated that the actions of the current leadership contradict national interests and do not reflect the opinion of the majority of citizens.
