According to the Vice Chancellor, it is important for Europe's response to be unified and clear. He also pointed out that the actions of the White House regarding territorial integrity have crossed an acceptable line, and European countries are not ready to accept the loss of Greenland.
"Everyone in the U.S. should realize now: Europeans will not accept this. A line has been crossed," he added, assuring that the willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington remains.
On January 17, Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 10% tariffs starting in February on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. There are plans to increase the rate to 25%, which will remain in effect until an agreement is reached on the purchase of Greenland.
In response to Trump's statement, eight NATO countries issued a joint statement expressing full support for Denmark and its autonomous territory of Greenland, reaffirming the principles of sovereignty and warning of the risk of "dangerous negative dynamics."
Threats from the U.S. were also condemned by the leaders of the European Union. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa confirmed that "Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to protecting its sovereignty."
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire for this island to become part of the U.S. In response to such attempts, the authorities of Denmark and Greenland warned Washington against attempts to seize their territory and called for respect for their sovereignty.
