As reported by NBC, Trump privately expresses the opinion that Canada will not be able to protect its borders from possible attacks by Russia or China.

Sources familiar with the situation state that American officials emphasize that Trump does not intend to "buy Canada." Instead, discussions are underway to expand cooperation between the U.S. and Canadian armed forces in the Arctic region.

At the same time, the issue of stationing American troops on Canadian northern border territory is not being considered, the network's sources clarified.

According to an unnamed senior U.S. official, "the world does not perceive Canada as a significant force in defense," as NBC reports.

In 2025, Trump referred to the resigned Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as "the governor of the great state of Canada" amid disputes over potential tariffs on Canadian goods. He later claimed that Canada could avoid trade tariffs and receive military protection if it became part of the U.S.
