According to the Syrian agency Sana, government forces fully control the city of Al-Tabqa and the surrounding dam. It is also reported that the Syrian army has destroyed the Al-Rashid bridge over the Euphrates River, which was opened in June 2024.

According to Reuters, the Syrian army has seized strategically important oil and gas fields, including Al-Omar and Konoko. This confirms that military actions are ongoing and encompass vital resources in the region.

The situation on the ground has escalated since late December 2025, when new clashes began between Kurdish forces and the Syrian army. By January 10, government troops had already controlled the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiya areas. Three days later, the Syrian authorities declared the eastern suburbs of Aleppo closed, accusing Kurdish formations of using these areas to launch drones at residential neighborhoods and military positions.

Additionally, on January 17, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa signed a decree recognizing the Kurdish language as official, which is an important step in the context of the current political changes in the country.
