A chimpanzee named Ai, famous for her ability to distinguish letters, numbers, and hieroglyphs, has passed away at the age of 49. This was reported by the Center for the Study of Human Evolutionary Behavior (formerly known as the Primate Research Institute) at Kyoto University, as conveyed by RIA Novosti.
“Chimpanzee Ai, who made significant contributions to research related to the evolution of thought and consciousness over many years, passed away on January 9. She left us surrounded by staff due to health issues caused by aging and organ failure. Since 1977, when she entered the institute, Ai participated in various scientific projects, including studies on the evolutionary origins of language and the development of learning, memory, and knowledge skills. She became a key figure in understanding what the 'chimpanzee mind' represents, as well as in reflections on human evolution,” noted representatives of the institute.

Chimpanzee Ai was known for her remarkable intelligence and learning ability. She could distinguish letters and numbers, and she accurately selected the hieroglyph for "green" when shown the color green. One of the most memorable episodes was when she managed to escape from her cage by using a key left nearby for a padlock. In 1985, her achievements were highlighted in the scientific journal Nature.
