At the last meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, a working group was formed, responsible for preparing for the introduction of the Borteg deposit into economic circulation, which is part of the Tavan Tolgoi cluster, as well as for organizing the process of selecting an investor.
The implementation of the project includes:
- a transparent process for the competitive selection of applications from investors;
- determining market prices for coal;
- maximizing profit retention within the country;
- priority development of value-added production;
- public and open implementation of all stages of bringing the deposit into economic circulation.
In order to assess investor interest, the government decided to announce an open international request for proposals on January 9 of this year.
The implementation of this project will help increase the income of the population from the use of natural resources, replenish the National Wealth Fund, and create financial resources to address socio-economic issues.
The feasibility study (FS) of the Borteg deposit was completed in 2020, and detailed exploration was conducted according to JORC standards. The updated FS is planned to be presented in the current quarter of 2026.
The special licensed area of Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi JSC includes strategically important coal deposits such as Tsenkhi, Bortolgoi, Onchkharaat, and Borteg.
