On Monday, the U.S. State Department reported that since Donald Trump took office as president on January 20, 2025, more than 100,000 visas have been revoked, as reported by Reuters.
In its message on social media platform X, the department specified that among the revoked visas were about 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialized visas issued to individuals who had contacts with U.S. law enforcement in the context of criminal activity. “We will continue to deport these criminals to ensure the safety of our country,” the statement said.

Newsweek reports that this figure is a record high in recent years and more than double the number of visas revoked during the administration of former President Joe Biden in 2024 (40,000 visas).

Deputy Press Secretary of the State Department Tommy Pigott outlined the main reasons for the visa revocations, which include overstaying, driving under the influence, assault, and theft. Additionally, Trump administration officials noted that holders of student visas and lawful permanent residents with green cards could be deported for supporting Palestinian groups and criticizing Israel's actions in the Gaza conflict, which they viewed as a threat to U.S. foreign policy and accused of ties to Hamas.

Trump's return to the White House last year led to the introduction of strict measures in immigration legislation, resulting in unprecedented rates of deportation of migrants, even those with valid visas. The Trump administration also tightened visa issuance policies, implementing stricter checks through social media and expanding selection procedures. Furthermore, the State Department issued guidelines requiring American diplomats abroad to be vigilant regarding applicants that Washington may consider potentially hostile and with a history of political activity.
