Italy's Prime Minister urged Europe to start negotiations not only with Kyiv but also with Moscow
Meloni also proposed appointing a special envoy from Europe for the Ukrainian issue to ensure a unified vision and coordination of actions. "Such a person will be able to speak on our behalf," she added.
In her opinion, Europe should initiate a dialogue with Russia, emphasizing that limiting communication to only one side will diminish its contribution to peace efforts. "What matters is not discord in negotiations, but consistency," she noted, warning against initiatives that could play into Vladimir Putin's hands.
Furthermore, Meloni considers it premature to discuss Russia's return to the G8, from which it was expelled after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
As of now, in January 2026, the main focus of negotiations to resolve the conflict is on the United States, which is consulting with both Moscow and Ukraine.
European leaders actively support dialogue with Ukraine, meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, but official negotiations with Russia are not taking place.
In December 2025, Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, emphasized the importance of continuing military assistance to Ukraine and applying pressure on the Russian economy to achieve peace negotiations.
