China calls for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife
Mao Ning noted that the disregard for Nicolás Maduro's status as the legitimate president has led to the initiation of legal proceedings against him in the United States. She emphasized that such actions are a serious violation of Venezuela's sovereignty and threaten global stability.
The representative of the Chinese foreign ministry also added that no country has the right to place its laws above international law. China strongly urges the U.S. to release Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and to ensure their safety.
The first court session in Maduro's case has concluded in New York, where he could face four life sentences for charges related to conspiracy involving drug trafficking, cocaine smuggling, and possession of weapons, as well as conspiracy to use them against the U.S.
During the session, Maduro stated that he "is still the president of Venezuela" and rejected all charges. His wife also confirmed her innocence. Communication was conducted through a translator using headphones for simultaneous interpretation.
The court ruled that Maduro must appear at the next hearing on March 17 and allowed access for consular officials. The politician's defense announced its intention to seek his release on bail.
