The situation regarding the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is under threat due to doubts about Morocco's readiness to host the tournament just two weeks before its start.
This tournament, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is scheduled to take place from July 5 to 26, 2025. Morocco was set to host it for the second consecutive time; however, reports of possible organizational difficulties have emerged in recent weeks.
Luxolo September, the head of CAF's communications department, stated that the situation is under review by the confederation's leadership, and a final decision will be announced shortly.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe previously emphasized the critical importance of the tournament, noting that it is a key stage in the qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, which will be held in Brazil.
The current situation has been sharply criticized in the Republic of South Africa. Sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen stated that such uncertainty just days before the tournament begins is unacceptable. He also confirmed South Africa's readiness to quickly host the competition on its territory.
It should be noted that 12 teams (instead of 16) will participate in the final tournament. The reigning champions are the athletes from South Africa, who won the final of the previous tournament (2022) against the Moroccan team with a score of 2:1. The Nigerian team, in turn, is the most decorated team in WAFCON history, although they left without medals last time.
